Back to this show,wall of sound, band really in synch. A little pane,ready to go, it was a wonderful night. Eyes, 2nd set eventually takes off and really doesnt end. Being there i can say memories from that day will last forever.

Since both this and the orginal sbd (1463) were patched with Ihor's tape I've always been curious as to why his full recording doesn't seem to circulate digitally. I've hoped for years that it would show up but it doesn't seem likely at this point.

Well, except the Phil & Ned, maybe. Dick's 31 has the highest of the highlights from Set One and the beginning of Set Two, but every single song in the first set has that extra oomph, that focus, that gets you up dancing and lets you know they came to PLAY! The second set features more slow songs and some space jamming in Truckin', but the band maintains their energy throughout, as when the faster parts come along, they are right on point. Jerry especially adds hot licks to every song.
This show is another argument for why 11/73 - 10/74 is the single greatest 12-month period in Dead history. It seems to me the band turned up the urgency in '74 as compared to the more laid-back, patient, and often spacey feel of '73. There are faster tempos, such as Sugaree which is played at an 80's tempo, and the band delivers some of its most energetic and creative playing, with everyone contributing. Also, this is the year for audience recordings, with the Wall of Sound fully in effect. The audience clapping along to Sugar Magnolia and the banter between songs adds to the feeling of being there.
Only quibble is that Bob's guitar is a bit low in the mix. Also, I'm not sure if it's in the recording or just my old speakers not being able to handle full-on Phil, but there is definitely some bass buzz at times. Otherwise, the sound is pristine. Definitely download and decode the files for the best sound (someone just turned me on to Trader's Little Helper which is an easy way to decode files in multiple compression formats including FLAC and Shorten). Thank you to everyone involved in getting this recording to the Archive.

The band's enthusiasm throughout most of this show is outstanding. There are so many highlights, but I hear it as consistently inspired from Bertha through Row Jimmy and the best I've heard from 74 so far. What's amazing to me is how tight, creative and juicy songs like Don't Ease Me In are. It's like they could have played Day Job (with aid of a time machine) and I would say this song is killer.
As another reviewer mentioned, Big River was played alot during this period, and yet I don't hear it as yet another Big River. It's like alright!!! Big River is happening!
So yeah the Eyes, Playin>Scarlet>Playin are most ut, but when the little songs blow me away, I know this is top 10 show.

and just had to say AMAZED at the clarity of this (outdoor, hidden without mic stand, from 1974) audience recording. absolutely mind-boggling that was possible. i can definitely understand now why this setup was so influential and can only hope that one day we will hear its equal again!!

hey Jerry has no beard-i want my money back,hahaha.....yeah,my first show also. well, first i went to the rain out night and two of my friends i drove with got beat up when they went to get something to eat after we got back to the car, one of them had a big bite mark on his back, crazy shit !!!! so, went the second time- with a different group,hah and got in and here come the Dead with Bertha to open-Nice . funny seeing Jerry beardless,we were stage left on the field not to far back...i remember Dont Ease stood out to me, kinda remember the Eyes weirdness with the stop and Weir harshing on someone... for some reason i kept track of the new tunes in my head while the show was progressing, not sure why,i was 16....Scarlet,Loose Lucy,US Blues, Ship of Fools from Mars Hotel which had just come out....was my first Sugar Mag sandwhich....long show,with fireworks lighting up each memebers name along the top of the stadium,twas the beginning of a long strange trip that is still going,YaY !!!! :)

My first Dead show, went to the rainout and heard some Ned and Phil in the afternoon. Then the clouds rolled in and it got ugly, the sky and the crowd. Bobby came out and said the speakers were getting wet and they had to postpone. A riot ensued. My 13 year old eyes saw some crazy stuff.. bottles flying, bikers beating, naked guys slithering across my feet in the mud covered with broken glass...Came back on the 6th, but the VW threw a rod on the way and we had to get a new ride, got there just as Bertha was starting. Bobby informed us all about Nixon's resignation. Then some great music. The Eyes was cut short before China Doll due to some idiots climbing the fence right in front of the stage while people flung bottles at them. The Playin' was sure different from the one in Philly 2 nights earlier. Ned and Phil was not announced and it just confused some people, i had heard it the day before, but full bore was something! On and on they played... someone hit Bobby's guitar neck with a glow stick in Truckin (you can hear a little hiccup in his singing). After the show they set off fireworks that just about set the old place on fire. The crowd made a quick exit amid the smoke and sparks, the whole place was wood! I actually wrote to Dick Latvala way back begging for this release, he wrote back telling me that Reel 3 was missing from the vault, apparently they found it, thank god. This combined with 8/4/74 in Philly are about 8 hours of my favorite GD music for the ages.

This is one of my favorite Grateful Dead shows. The level of cohesiveness expanding from song form to improvisation in a controlled chaos is astounding! Every single band member is on fire and at the height of their powers. Jerry seems to give the vocals a little something extra on this night. I love how he tells the crowd at the end, "you guys are too much." Classic.
By the way, ignore what anyone complaining about the quality of this AUD recording has to say. This is a fantastic recording with each instrument very evenly balanced and present in the mix. The matrix of this show is excellent as well, with the best of both SBD and AUD recordings. I actually prefer the AUD to the SBD due to the superior balance and presence between/among all instruments and vocals that is lacking somewhat on DP31.

My first show. I got it.Its a communal vibe.Sometimes it will happen. Sometimes it will not. Ship of Fools was my spiritual high from this show. Nothing compares.

Just listening to this show from gdradio.net, and am amazed at the level of experimentation on Playin. It almost sounded like a funky jazz fusion band, as they smoothly segue into Scarlet with a more-than-usual funky beat. This is a great set indeed. I'd like to get a copy of the board.

This was at a time the Dead were against taping. It was near impossible to get a tape deck into a show and mike stands weren't used. Roosevelt Stadium allowed coolers of beer though. Someone must have hidden their equipment under their beer. Today it would be the other way around.

You guys are gonna laugh, but I got a lot of enjoyment listening to the "fireworks" track.

I have along with this show 8/6/74 ~ 3/23/75 ~ 6/12/76 ~ 6/21/76 ~ 9/16/78 ~ 5/16/81 ~ 12/30/85 ~ 5/2/87 & 6/30/95 Which when I try to unzip them a password protected screen pops up I can asure you I'm a Head through & through & wont give or trade these shows I just really need them for my collection I missed the date to download the boards before they stopped letting ya do that and these are all gem or Bear's copys if someone knows the passwords I would truly be Grateful (~);}

My first show, and I wouldn't have gotten a ticket if a friend who was at the rain-out the previous Friday couldn't go.
Walked in just as Bertha started, and was just mesmerized for the next 4 hours - converted for Life! Sitting half-way up in the stands center stage was a great way to experience the all-powerful Wall. Will never forget the two parallel streams of red, white and blue giant beach balls undulating from the stage to the back of the crowd during the USB encore.

Dick, as good as he was, screwed up again by playing Archive God and meshing three shows three shows together at his whim (August 4,5 & 6, 1974), rather than being the purist he should've been and IMHO providing us with this entire concert.
This is by any measure a very good to excellent audience tape (the vocal mix is off in a strange way at times, example GDTRFB), although when push comes to shove I prefer one of Healey's Matrix tapes Seriously, who doesn't?? If you don't know what I'm referring to check out Dane County Coliseum, 2/15/73. Also, while Dick can be faulted for combining shows, the quality of his masters cannot be denied.
High points of the Wall of Sound show (evidenced by the staggering clarity and definition of Phil's bass) are many, including a classic rendering of Eyes of the World (Jerry's energy and Phil's relentlessness. The band is in perfect synch!); a scintillating combo of Playing-Scarlet-Playing (a 36 min audio orgasm of epic proportions, and the seven song stretch from Sugar Magnolia through Sugar Mad redux is spectacular. Drums and Space are built into The Other One jam and this entire 60 minute segment is quintessential Dead -- a veritable microcosm of who they are and what they stand for. Just so damn good that it defies words, though I have tried...
Finally, this is the official kick ass monumental archive, c'mon guys, break the song lists down by sets. Not to have done so is silly, lay and in my opinion a major oversight by an otherwise dedicated and loyal group of individuals who made it possible in the first place. It has become a major disappointment for me personally for obvious reasons. Still, the positives overshadow any shortcomings in presentation. Kudos to universal access!

I had no idea this existed. For years I told people I heard Nixon resigned from Jerry Garcia at this concert only to find out it was Steven Stills at the CSN&Y concert two nights later. Some of the 70s, and most Dead concerts, were not well remembered for the details. My car caught fire on the turnpike by New Brunswick on the way home from the original rained out date and some Deadheads in an old police car stopped to offer a push, and some drinks. If that was you and your friends Chuckster (below), thanks for stopping. That, I remember.

One of the quietest openings to the Phil & Ned segment, it builds slowly. this recording captures the subtle modulations of their analog gear well, mic placement must been good for that portion of the show but its so rude of heads to talk over them!

I still remember hearing Phil make that fearful announcement during the rain storm. Almost remember the crazy scene in the parking lot as people tried to drive when they could barely walk. A guy walking by wearing a watermelon for a hat.. Trying to explain to my boss at Burger King that I needed another night off. (I was 17). This show was amazing. Clem's car Bertha ( a former police cruiser black Ford Custom)was filled with me, Ducky, Hacker, Larry and Timmy. Sadly Clem passed away this year But Hacker and Ducky and I remain friends. Emailing Dick at Dead.net begging for this show but being told the SBD didn't exist. Hacker still has the flag he made for the show (EPI)

I'm glad I was prompted to listen to this by a recent review. I mostly listen to shows from '72 or earlier. I usually find that, tho' the later shows are great by the standards of any other band, there is something in the earlier shows that's over and above. It's that excitement of: we don't know what's going to happen - anything could happen and we're open to giving it a chance - and who the hell cares anyway, because we're doing it, we're in it NOW. It's timeless, and other concerns just melt away while you're in the music.
This show has that. Just listen to "Eyes of the World" - that's what it's all about!!
And, oh yes, if all the AUD's were like this I'd listen to them more.

While I haven't been to that many shows, this was my first, and best because of the quality of the sound. After the first set my friend asked "What do you think?", and I was speechless. I've have the SBD from FLAC for years now, but this AUD captures the feel and POWER of the music.

To my ears this AUD is better, Yes, BETTER, than the DP version. So if that (DP) is the SBD that others are on about, I don't understand them.
The DP version, like many but not all DP/RT/SBD, is too quiet in the vocals and Bob's guitar. This AUD has better balance. But more than that, it is far more FUN. The crowd really adds to the feel, and in all the right places. During the great guitar jams and solos you are hardly aware of the crowd, but when it is time to applause ... YeeeHa..

This Tuesday show was to make up for the previous Friday which was rained out; this despite the following being printed on each ticket: "TO BE HELD RAIN OR SHINE." We had been saving very high quality blotters for weeks, and after experiencing a very trippy rain storm on Friday (the storm battling the 'Wall of Sound,' crew members climbing the enormous beast to secure it), come Tuesday's show we had no doses left.
They played an all-time great EYES, as well as a fabulous PITB. After the show, we found that every third or fourth car had it's window broken and it's tape player missing. A memorable week for a 17-year-old Dead Head.
About the quality of this recording: I've said this before, and I'll say it again. Thanks to this archive and the likes of Charlie Miller, we are spoiled. Sound quality wise. Back in the day, when we collected tapes (cassettes), sound quality was important, but getting the performances (relatively) uncut was just as, if not more, important. And MOST important of all was getting songs not available on vinyl - like a live performance of Doin' That Rag into The Seven into Good Lovin' (into Saint Stephen into The Eleven). Of course those of you in the know, know I am referring to the amazing concert right here in New York City, on September 29, 1969 at the Cafe au Go-Go. But there are many more examples. So let's travel back in time 38 years, and then we'll leap even further back.
It's 1974, you're 17 years old and you've quietly entered the house. It's the wee hours of the morning, and the rest of the family are asleep. It will be several hours till you can sleep, of course, because there are still several hundred micrograms of blotter swirling in your brain. So you slip on the headphones, snap in a cassette and press play...lay down in the dark...and are transported back to 1969. Five whole years! There's no time to whine about the poor sound quality, you're too busy marveling at the miracle of time travel!
I saw a neighbor I haven't seen in ten years the other day. "What happened to the motorcycle?" he asked. "And your hair! You used to have more hair!"
"You lose one," I told him, "and then you lose the other."
We are all time travelers.

Not only an incredible show over all but an unbelievable audience recording and a joy to listen to in the car!

My first Dead Concert, what else can I say I was hooked from this show!!!

First, who doesn't appreciate nice clean SBDS? But, I really appreciate the good quality audience recordings from the old days. First, you get a sense of what the concert was like from the audience's perspective. Second, it was a greater challenge back in the old days. The field recording gear available was not what it was like a decade later and let us not forget that the luxury of the "tapers pit" was a later invention. Having taped in the 80s, it was so much easier; so these folks did tough work back then to make the tapes. Thanks to all you who blazed the taping trail back then.

Geez, almost 35 years ago...straining my memory but the music brings a few back. Guess it was July and we were ready for the show...dropped some acid and off we went...rain with thunder and lightning...stage was soaked...Phil came out with a clear plastic poncho that covered his guitar...when he tried to play sparks flew...the crowd went nuts (duh, everybody was trippin)...show was cancelled, rescheduled, blah, blah...had to go home trippin...who's driving?...where's the car?...came back on the 6th to an incredible show...giant balloons bouncing around the stadium...I've heard Dick's picks of this show but if you close your eyes while listening, THIS IS PRETTY DAMN CLOSE TO WHAT A GRATEFUL DEAD CONCERT SOUNDED LIKE...thanks for posting this, Neil..anyone interested can write, say hi...Mike (atomicon3@earthlink.net)

This whole concert is fantastic, but I really want to say that this eyes of the world is the best I've ever heard, and for once it's NOT because of the jam after the song (in fact, it's a little too long for my taste, especially since it never goes anywhere, it just sort of dies out at the end). The two solos jerry takes in between the three verses are mind-blowing. I have never heard him play like that in ANY eyes ever; so fast, so beautifully phrased, so inspired. The AUD on this one is a treasure because you can hear the crowd freaking out as the solos expand and the tension builds... although it should be noted that the soundboard of this, the playing -> scarlet -> playing and uncle john's band cuts are on dick's picks volume 31, so anyone who likes the version on this AUD ought to check that release out (the whole pick is dynamite from beginning to end and has a lot of the 8/4 and 8/5 shows as well).

This was a decent show as always.If I recall it was hot as hell that day as two car loads of us drove from LI.Sat in the stands off the left side of the stage but the sound was good but I was getting a contact buzz from the people next to us smoking opium.Anyway the Dead performance was better than this tape reveals.First time I heard Ship Of Fools live.I can't help but remember that a great was ruined when I got back to my car and some a------s threw a huge rock threw my passenger window and we had to drive home like that.Anyway f--- em.

What a smokin first set. I have a soundboard cassette of this w/ flawless patches at the reel changes. I love this show!

I was at this show. The show turned at Jack Straw. Something happened there. At the beginning of Sugar Magnolia, the large stadium clock read 11:55; Show started promptly at 7:00 pm.
The rest is history.

bertha is funky. the first set rocks. every song, right on through Jack Straw which I believe is the second set. Eyes of the World is a gem. and the Playin>Scarlet>Playin>phil and ned or whatever happens next is what makes the Grateful Dead the Grateful Dead.

great set very much enjoyed the recording--- have been a deadhead all my life although i am only 21, most of my live experience exclusivly consists of phil and the dead, the other ones, etc. i have been to and litsened to hundreds of sets but i would very much like to connect to someone via email and perhaps swap or recieve a mass amount of good dead shows from the prime days, downloading them from here is great and i have done that so many times im running out of space, would love to convert some of the collection to cd. my emial address is cf72302@appstate.edu and i would love to trade info with someone in hopes of recieiving a large collection of tapes!!! thanks to all please respond!!!

1st Set: "Bertha" mid-tempo but Garcia's grinding cutter guitar solo pleases. Nothing special about 'Mexicali' but good time fun...rather Jerry's carrying a strong line of tonal pleasures - at this point the polka wasn't as pointed as 80's arena versions...breezy yet skippable 'Don't Ease' Jerry's instrument is on so far...or it sounds real nice. Band ain't together on a nine or ten beat "Beat." Same commentary as before. Alright, my first 'Sugaree' since listening to the string of 07-31 through tonight. For any pretentious enough to create a lovemaking disc - I recommend the song for those soft, slinky evenings. As for the version, it's the song...nothing else but there on a 3 1/2 star plain so it's good listening. Of course we can't have a night without "Jack" it's better than 8/5, not as 8/4. Crowd's clapping along. Oh goodness, it's early for the first "Eyes" of the past three nights. And it's twenty minutes - they're breaking the mold tonight. Phil does some lovely work six-seven minutes in (I've got no timer - so it's all approximatin) The last few minutes are quite intricately involving - but it's not a definitive version...in fact I may like 7-31's better. The tune appears to end abruptly - Bobby says something about ??? and they go into a breezy, just fine "Promised." "Deal's" arranged well to be a stomper - it's good ol' GD. The second epic of the first set (here's bettin the second's lackluster on that front) "Playin" the song's not as strong as 8-4 but the jam quizzically probes...Jerry and Phil are in line with each other. I wish they would have continued to funk shit up around the seventeen minute mark like Jerry did with Restoration near the end of the decade. I'm not certain if 'Playin' remains unfinished or if it genuinely segues into 'Scarlet' If it is indeed the later, kudos as it's something rarified. There's something simplistically friendly/becoming/amiable/swingin about its beat that pleases. Donna's welcomingly active mid-way. Not filled with depth but enjoyable. We're all together enjoyin this novel experience as "Playin" (they extend the end by a good fifteen seconds so Dionyseus won't leave the Roosevelt.) returns to wrap up a very satisfying first set. No way they could top this.
2nd Set: People appear overwhelmed with kindness for the "UJB" opener. The perfect call - hopefully 'Seastones' didn't disturb the mindset. It wanders out into an uncertain forest - but do stay for the song. The rest of the show was discluded from the the DP #31 release...any reason why - let's see... Shit, some people are as ecstatic as me to hear "Black Peter." Were all the rules thrown out tonight? It's slow-burnin. Steady drummin and Keith's present, but the guitars and Jerr's voice lack energy. "El Paso" is nice - Bob then remarks that because the temperature keeps changing they need to tune up - once more. Some obnoxious young men are calling for St. Stephen even if they haven't played it in 18 months. Well, from the wise and well-educated to the slutty, "Loose Lucy." Pretty standard and a little sloppy. The "Big River" follows is like the others in the past week - hard-charging rock boogie. It's fine. "Ship" is nothing outstanding save some nice harmonies near the end. "Uncle" is decent and goes down easily. "Row's" a little dull as it develops its playfulness in later years. "Sugar" makes the crowd happy - is the show over? It's more contemplative than ecstatic. It's molds together jazzily - rather idisyncratic, hmmm... show ain't ending a repeat of "He's Gone" Simple execution equals success - campfire breakdown. Time for "Truckin" light and jazzy - in fact the sound of the second set closer resembles '73...Jerry's recovered the strength of his guitar. We're back aboard after unnecessary 'Paso to Jimmy.' It wants to celebrate the nighttime as it loses all drums shortly afterwards. The "Spanish Jam" remains compelling but won't fright you out of your socks. It seamlessly blends into "TOO" that completes the previous night's tease. One must imagine they're tired as it's not really exploding. Things get a little demented after the first verse...but it feels more concilliatory as the band too quickly blows their load. "GDTRFB" stumbles into a mild-mannered clap-along. "Sunshine" appropriately ends the set on a high note. Jerry thanks the crowd and strongly asserts that they're too much. The perfunctory cheery US Blues" follows.
Well, I see why the second set was barely included on the D release as it's lacking steam.

I, for one, love the aud tapes that are here. It takes me back to the years I spent "in the business", as a lighting designer, and yes, kiddies, there was hiss and pop at the shows. Some goof trips on the snake and dislodges it from the board, house lights not properly grounded, etc., etc., blah infinitum. Yes, it made us techies shriek and stamp our haurachi's, gnash at our Space Food Sticks and put wrinkles on our faces. So be it. Trying to conjure digital from analog is a bit schizophrenic, no? Sit back and enjoy your Daddy's ride. It's a rare treat and if your try really hard, or not at all, you can dig the vibe as it was put down. I wouldn't trade these gems for anything. Smoke 'em if you got 'em...
Oh yea. This great show was recorded on my 20th birthday and I got to hear it a couple of months, not weeks, later. I was stoked to the gills to play it on my Roberts 770X four track reel to reel through twin Macintosh 50's and Voice Of The Theatre stacks.

I remember back in the day, all we had were 3rd & 4th gen aud tapes. You were lucky to get a 1st or 2nd gen. tape. That was the way I met alot of deadheads, by trading and hanging at Heads Together or other shops. I still have this show in my shoebox (don't have a tape deck anymore. This show will always rate highly with me. Don't get me wrong, I love downloading shows this way, but still love the occasional rough aud. This isn't as bad. Go ahead give it a listen. (

The recording is pretty damn good for the vintage. Playin-scarlet-playin is a standout. High energy and fluid playing. Havent listened to the whole show but have dl it based on a few selections. Great time for GD music. Nothing formulaic about it.

The playing jam melts into scarlet begonias with sortof funky jazzy thing that blows me away. The whole second set is permeated with this jazzyness and i love every second.

I am so glad I ignored these reviews by the soundboard wimps and downloaded this one! For those of us who have a trained ear for audience recordings, i.e. grew-up on worse sounding tapes, this is a good sounding tape, clear, can hear all the instruments, good audience that does not drownd-out any sound. It is the GOOD OL' GRATEFUL DEAD! A great show from a great era! I don't give 5 stars lightly.

So weird that you would write today. I don't remeber too much from the show except hanging on for dear life. Got dared to take 2 hits of window pane. What a schmuck. It would have been safer to play on the Belt parkway.
Nonetheless. I was very proud of myself.

was this the show where they put up those huge video monitors? first time i ever saw that.
my second summer of dead shows. preeeetty mellow. ate lots of black hash. last year's with the band much better.

I gotta wonder how familiar the last 2 reviewers are with audience recordings. This isn't exactly a great one, but it is pretty good. I think the very beginning of the first track is pretty screwy, which may be the cause of some of the confusion, but to say that the rest of this recording is poor is WAY off. There's some kind of phasing sound, probably from the original tape, but it sounds pretty clear for a AUD. The circulating SBD is one of the best sounding Dead SBDs ever, so if you can get your hands on it, go for it. But in the meantime, this recording is pretty good. Unless you just plain don't like AUD recordings, this is far from a waste of time and plastic.

OK, I don't want to put down whoever recorded this show. Just to accomplish this feat is/was incredible. But this is a pretty awful recording, due to age, whatever the case. I DON'T recommend downloading this, it's very hissy and poppy and it's just basically very bad. You can hear the individual instruments pretty well which just goes to show how the Wall of Sound could shine through even the poorest of recordings. The best of this show was released on DP31. This was a great show, perhaps not as great as 8/4 or 8/5 so you're really not missing much if you haven't heard what isn't on DP31. The most interesting part of this recording is listening to all the rowdy Jersey City fans screaming out requests for "CASEY JONES!" and "UNCLE JOHN'S BAND!" When you read the liner notes of DP31, this exact syndrome is described and it is said to be a contributing factor in why the band quit touring for almost 2 years. They only played Jersey City once more after this, almost 2 years to the day after this concert. The recording of that show is better than this.

God it's good to see this show again. I had this tape for the longest time then somewhere along the line it disappeared on me. I always loved it because it's just a great show, vibe wise. A pretty good audience recording that really gives the feel of what it was like to be at a Dead show back then. Perfect example is the Uncle John's band with a little reggae groove at the beginning, the crowd clapping and cheering in time ... My favorite part of the show. Whoever posted this show THANK YOU!

The fourth disc alone is some of the best Dead you will hear.
